Windows server 2016 là hệ điều hành dành cho máy chủ mới nhất hiện nay của microsof.
Windows Server 2016 là sự khởi đầu của một hướng mới cho hệ điều hành của Microsoft, với một loạt các tính năng mới mà chủ yếu là tập trung vào công nghệ điện toán đám mây và ảo hóa. Window Server 2016 đưa ra các cải tiến về Hyper-V, container, lưu trữ ổ đĩa và nhiều tính năng khác nữa. Bên cạnh đó, Microsoft còn cho ra đời 1 định nghĩa có tên gọi là nano server.
Phiên bản hệ điều hành này sẽ hỗ trợ công nghệ đóng gói của Docker với các container chạy trên một kernal Linux bằng máy ảo Hyper-V. Và Hyper-V Container sẽ chạy trực tiếp trên Windows OS của máy chủ một cách đôc lập với nhau nhờ công nghệ ảo hóa Hyper-V.
Từ Windows server 2016 microsoft chỉ còn đưa ra 2 phiên bản là: Windows server 2016 datacenter và Windows server 2016 standard
